So my go to tip on a carbon shaft is the predator victory medium, and I use ultraskin softs on all my wood shafts. Most other tips don't make it a week for me without having to be trimmed, at least when they are new. It requires almost no maintenance other than a trim about once a month. From day one I loved that tip, everything just felt natural when shooting with it. These shafts feature a low-rise taper, and this model has a 12.4mm Predator Victory soft tip. The end result is precision instrument that’s designed to maximize output and consistency. Instead of the predator (victory) soft tip, I custom ordered the shaft with a Predator (victory) medium tip. Description Accuracy and consistency are top priorities for Predator, that’s why they spent almost 10 years developing the world’s first carbon composite shaft. I ended up selling that shaft two weeks later because I got a new predator cue that came with a revo shaft. It took me a bit to adjust, but never fell in love with it. I got a Revo shaft last August and it came with the predator soft tip on it. They don't require as much maintenance as the Kamuis do. The ultraskin tips feel just like a kamui to me and I can get 10 of them for almost the cost of one kamui tip. At $25 bucks a tip, i moved on from them. I really liked Kamui tips, but the maintenance on them was a lot and they didn't last as long as most other tips. I tried a LOT of tips on the market over the past few years and pretty much Ultra-Skin Softs became my tip of choice. Dave Billiards - Tip hardness effectsĪs you said, its really personal on what you feel comfortable shooting with and how much time you want to put into maintenance. If you wanted to get really picky and bust out a lab quality high speed camera, the hard tip will have slightly better results than a soft tip.ĭr. You will not get more spin from a soft tip vs a hard tip. This is unfortunately is 100% not true, your shot results will be identical. Most would probably say they got better english with the soft tip as well. If I gave you two identical cues and you executed an identical shots with each cue, but one had a hard tip and one had a soft tip, 90% of people would say the soft felt better and had a better hit. Whether you hit the cue ball with a cue stick or roundhouse kick it, the cue doesn't know or care.įeel is a totally personal thing. It only knows mass X hit it with force Y, sending it in direction Z. The cue ball doesn't know or care what hit it. No less energy is transferred, just a different direction than you intended This is why carbon fiber cues are hollow for the last 4 inches. This is why wood shafts are usually hollow and not solid steel. This is why ferrules are light and not solid steel. Low deflection vs high deflection is caused by the end mass of a shaft. You need a very high speed camera to detect this. The contact time of the cue tip and cue ball between soft and hard tips is 1/1,000 of a second difference. The difference between a soft tip and hard tip impact absorption is less than 1%, you will never be able to notice this.
